Eco Tours – Bay Owl – Thailand Photography Field Trips

Thailand Photographic Eco Tours covers birds, reptiles, amphibians, or whatever you want to target.

Eco tours favorite - a Bay Owl perched on a branch at night in the tropical rainforest in Krabi, Thailand. Found during a focus on night time tropical rainforest photography.

Lucky Bay Owl Found on One of Our Eco Tours!

Sometimes we get lucky on our eco tour and see something we haven’t seen before. It happens fairly often, there are a lot of birds, owls, reptiles, and bugs in Thailand!

This Bay Owl, common on the island of Phuket, isn’t so common in our area just north and east of the island in Krabi. This was a solo tour for a young biologist graduating from university in North Carolina. We were focused on herping for frogs, lizards, and snakes, when we noticed something about 50 meters away in the tree. It was white against the very dark background, so we weren’t sure what we had. Slow lorises, which are fairly common, are darker and their eyes shine bright red. It wasn’t that… after a bit of a treacherous hike up the hill we came upon this amazing sight – a Bay Owl that wasn’t spooked enough to leave. We just watched and took photos and studied it for ten minutes or so before leaving her to her night of hunting.

Most of the species we target for night time eco tours are reptiles and amphibians. We go at night because the weather is cooler and the wildlife is much easier to spot in the beam of a headlamp or flashlight.

If there is a type of wildlife you would like to target during your eco tours vacation, we can plan an adventure for you to find what you’re looking for. Ideally give us a couple of weeks notice, but you’re already in Southern Thailand and you have a day or a couple days to go out and see what we can find – let us know and we’ll see if we can set something up for you. After all, it may be the only opportunity you get to see some of these amazing creatures that are under the constant threat of deforestation which is occurring at a horrifying rate all over Southeast Asia.
